Aims and Actions

We are focused on the alarming growth of the Western Australian gas industry and the failure of successive Australian governments to check global heating.

Our aims:

1) Bring the facts and dangers of the WA gas industry to the attention of all Australians and seek their help to close it down.

2) Encourage Australians to use their democratic rights to vote for climate action.

Our actions:

1) Mount the Cavalcade to achieve maximum publicity and support for our overarching goal, to phase out gas.

2) Request meetings with members of WA State and Federal Parliaments, particularly those responsible for environment and energy, and persuade them to phase out gas.

3) Establish petitions’ to WA State and Federal governments, to phase out gas, treat global heating as an emergency and commit to a Duty of Care for future generations.

4) Help galvanize the movement: Vote 1 for climate action.

Mounting the Cavalcade.

The Cavalcade will be an enormous effort for a group of elderly grandparents. But that is precisely why we have planned it. Because it will show parliamentarians how determined we are that they phase out gas and reduce global heating. And, through publicity, petitions and pledges, convince them to act urgently:   Or be replaced by those who will!

So a small group of us, aged from 50 to 81, will attempt to ride push bikes or electric bikes all or part of the way from Perth to Canberra and then make their way back to Northam before cycling back to Perth; a distance of over 4200 km including detours for bike friendly roads.

The journey will take take over two months to complete and yet longer to prepare and train for. Others, perhaps wiser or matured beyond cycling, will drive EV and conventional vehicles to support the riders and swell the Cavalcade into a driving force for change.

Perth to Canberra.

The Cavalcade will commence in Perth with a major event on the 14th of August at Parliament House.  We will then leave for the East in mid August although speedier Cavalcaders may leave a little later. We will journey across First Nations lands, first to Coolgardie, and then to Norseman for the first major leg; around 750 km. From Norseman, we cross the mighty Nullabor to Ceduna; around 1250 km.

We then take a number of routes to Adelaide, around 850km, for our first major stop and Cavalcade event on the 16th of September. From Adelaide we travel to Melbourne, around 800 km, for our second major event on the 27th of September. And finally we head to Canberra, around 850 km, for the main event of our Eastern journey, taking place on the 9th of October.

We aim to arrive in Canberra around October 7th. We will spend three days delivering a petition, meeting with parliamentarians, catching up with other climate action groups and staging street theatre to drive home the urgency of Climate Action.

Return to Perth.

We will return to Perth quickly to maintain momentum and pressure our state parliamentarians to phase out gas.
Cyclists will be ferried by our EV cavalcaders from Canberra to Northam.
They will then remount their bicycles to arrive in Perth by October 24th for a joint sitting of the WA Parliament.
As in Canberra, we will present a petition and seek further meetings with our representatives.
We will conclude the Cavalcade with public meetings, street theatre and a rallying cry to:

Follow our progress.

You can see what events are taking place and track our progress here, on our news and blog page, and on our social media.
