Cavalcade to Canberra and Back: Phase out Gas!

Western Australian Grandparents and supporters are on a quest. We will cycle from Perth to Canberra And urge parliamentarians and voters to do all that they can to phase out gas. For the sake of our children, our grandchildren and the planet they will inherit.

Our Cavalcaders were in Melbourne on the 27th of September to meet up with Extinction Rebellion Vic for their weekly vigil at Parliament House.

We have a problem: our WA government is hooked on gas;
and our federal government is doing nothing to help!

WA exports vast quantities of LNG gas that contribute directly to global heating.

It accounts for 60% of all Australian LNG exports and an astounding 12% of world exports.

Yet its government plans to export more, much more for decades to come.

This will only exacerbate global heating and further threaten our children’s future.

WA gas also threatens priceless centres of immense cultural and spiritual significance.

Murujuga (Burrup Peninsula), a deeply sacred place, contains the largest, oldest collection of Aboriginal rock art in the world. It has been nominated for World Heritage Listing.
But continued development of nearby LNG gas processing facilities will degrade much of the rock art; yet another blow to First Nation Peoples, and to our shared global culture.

These travesties must be stopped!

As concerned parents and grandparents, we ask all Australians to prevent our state government and its fossil fuel cohorts from stoking the fires of global heating and degrading First Nation Peoples, irreplaceable art and spiritual associations.

Our Quest

We have planned an ambitious journey.
We will do our best to cycle from Perth to Canberra, leaving on 14th of August!
And then travel back to Perth to present our petition to the WA Parliament.
A distance of well over 4000 km
As a small cavalcade of elderly cyclists, friends, and EV support vehicles.

We will arrive in Canberra in mid-October to petition our Commonwealth government:

To block any further gas development throughout Australia and rapidly wind back existing exports.
We will then return to Perth and present our State government with the strongest possible plea:

  • To escape from their bonds to the fossil fuel industry
  • Phase out gas extraction and export as a matter of urgency
  • And put its people and future generations first, as it rightly should.

WA state parliament : captured by Gas Corporations; their lobbyists, propagandists, bribes and future jobs (revolving doors)

Our Cavalcade Launch event was held on the 14th of August, leaving from WA Parliament House.  Further events held or planned include:

  • Joined the Extinction Rebellion SA on their weekly ‘Santos we are watching you’ protest on the 16th of September
  • We joined Extinction Rebellion Vic on the 27th of September for their weekly protest at Parliament House in Melbourne
  • Our big ‘Welcome to Canberra’ event in front of Parliament House Canberra will be on the 9th of October at 11:15am, followed by
  • Our return to Perth event at WA Parliament House is planned for 1pm on the 24th of October.

The WA Grandparents acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live, meet and work.  We wish to pay our respects to Elders, past present and emerging, and recognise the continuous connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to land, water and country.

We particularly acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the native lands that we will be crossing on our way from Perth to Canberra and thank them for their stewardship.
